Personality and History
Personality
Jiaying is a reserved person, usually more focused on her work and herself than the people around her. Unlike others she doesn't crave attention or human interaction, she's perfectly content to be alone and sometimes she prefers it. This is most likely because she spent most of her teenage years studying in an effort to beat out her fellow students, something that led her to develop some pretty bad habits that she's still trying to rid herself of. It's also her main motivation for trying to quietly help out the students of Hogwarts that tend to not look after themselves during exam time or just seem to spend time alone in the library, she doesn't know whether it's because she's been unable to have kids and is projecting her motherly side onto them or it's what she wished someone did for her when she was their age. Probably both.

She's a Slytherin at heart, a strong sense of fraternity and a very ambitious nature. She used to obsess over being successful and being the best at everything, occasionally to the point of recklessness (which was probably why the hat had debated between Gryffindor and Slytherin for so long before settling on the latter.) this recklessness what was ended up being her undoing when she got older. Despite her recklessness, she's always been introverted, a quiet confidence to her that either impressed or intimidated people. When it came to students it was usually the latter.

She's a perceptive person, her quiet nature allowing her to see what others don't and she's at peace with herself. She knows her flaws and faults just as well as she knows her strengths which allows her to balance herself out, though this is a skill she's acquired over time.

Unlike some people she knows she isn't the type to meddle in others business when it doesn't concern her, she rarely offers help unless asked and tries to stay out of peoples business unless she knows things won't trace back to her. The only time she'll "meddle," is when it concerns her or the library if a student breaks the rules or breaks something she'll happily make their life as uncomfortable as possible, making the student weak at the knees with a simple glare or calmly delivered threat. (Not that she'd ever actually seriously injure a student but the threat alone of doing so when combined with her somewhat intimidating nature is usually enough to make a student think twice before crossing her.)

She's very serious and professional, what you see with her is usually what you get and she isn't really the coworker that you can chat and gossip with. You're welcome to try to unload your problems to her but it's likely you'd simply get a raised eyebrow and a question of what you expect her to do about it in return.

Under her frosty ice-queen exterior there is a heart, as proven through the way she'll look out for certain students, she just isn't the type to wear it on her sleeve.

History
She was born in a small town in the west of China to two wizards from old pureblood families, she had a happy carefree childhood being taught magic from a young age by her parents and grandparents, who sadly passed when she was five so her memories of them are cloudy and vague.

At the age of six her parents separated, her brother going with her Father whilst Jiaying stayed with her Mother. Her Father stayed in touch and for the next three years she saw quite a lot, despite the divorce her parents remained close friends and it wasn't uncommon for them to go for a meal together or a walk in the park. The two had separated from the family home but remained within the same small town, so her Father was never very far away.

When she turned seven she received an invitation to attend Mahoutokoro School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, located on a Japanese volcanic island it was the closest wizarding school to where she lived. Although it was an invite to attend as a day student, whilst she'd loved the idea her parents had decided that the distance would be too far for her to travel on a daily basis and decided to wait until she was eleven. And instead sent her to their region's equivalent of a muggle primary school for witches and wizards.

Finally, at the age of eleven, she was allowed to enrol, though her Father had wanted her to attend Koldovstoretz school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She could still remember how beautiful the school had looked in the early morning sunlight and the way the translucent white stone seemed to glow during the night. Her first three years at that school were some of the best years of her life, they were Quidditch mad and so she played the game for one of the school teams as a Chaser and found herself excelling at Defence Against the Dark Arts and Transfiguration.

Whilst she was away at Mahoutokoro her Mother met David Lackman, an American Wizarding diplomat that dealt with foreign relations. The two fell in love and when Jiaying returned for the Summer Holidays, after the end of her second year at Mahoutokoro she was informed that the two were engaged. At first, she'd been angry and resentful, she'd stormed to her Father's house and had been shocked to find out that both he and her brother had known and they were okay with it. Happy even. Her Father explained that he didn't want her Mother to be alone forever and he hoped that one day he'd be able to move on too. She stayed for a few more hours with him, telling him about her year and the stories she'd forgotten to include in her letters, before returning home.

She had met David before but the idea of her Mother getting re-married was a daunting one but she gave them her blessing and at the end of August the pair got married.

Midway through Jiaying's third year her Mother apparated to her school and pulled her out of lessons, David was being reassigned to Britain and her Mother was going to be moving with him. Though it was up to Jiaying if she wanted to stay and live with her Father or transfer to Hogwarts with her Mother.

Strangely it had been Quidditch to decide it for her, the stories of a bunch of rowdy Hogwarts students introducing the sport to her school were well known and she wanted to see the place where the sport she loved originated. And she'd always wanted to travel. Although the decision was hard she ultimately decided to transfer and three weeks later she found herself in Britain alongside her Mother, Step-Father and Step-brother.

Though she couldn't start Hogwarts until the next Academic year she was still allowed to move on to the year she would have been going into if she hadn't moved. She enjoyed her time at Hogwarts, although she did sometimes struggle with the language - she had been learning English since a young age (her Mother was multilingual and wanted her daughter to be too) but it was still hard as it wasn't her first language. Her Step-Father gifted her a wooden bead bracelet that was charmed to translate books and pieces of text, something he claimed he often used in his line of work. As the year progressed she made friends and found her footing, joining the duelling club and the Slytherin Quidditch team as a Chaser.

The years passed and she excelled at her owls, her ambitious nature making her want to be the best at everything and for the most part she was. She spent many nights holed up in the library until curfew as she tried to cram every last bit of knowledge into her head, some joked it meant she should have been a Ravenclaw but it wasn't that she loved learning (though she did enjoy it) she simply wanted to know more than the other people in her year.

She got O's and E's in hew OWLS (She'd taken Ancient Runes and Arithmancy as her electives.) and went on to do Defence Against The Dark Arts, Charms, Transfiguration, Potions and Ancient Runes. Where she scored an O, O, E, E and an O respectively. These qualifications led her t becoming a Curse-Breaker she liked the idea of seeing the world and it seemed like a respectable job, she trained with the Ministry before becoming employed by Gringotts at the age of 28.

She spent the next ten years as a curse-breaker, risking her life to bring back wanted treasures and artefacts to the British bank. Then one year, on one job, it went wrong. The curse was an old and nasty one, a one she'd never seen before and she should have waited and researched a bit more but Jiaying was close to a promotion and she wanted to prove herself. Prove that she was just as good of a curse-breaker as the people above her, prove that she was better than them.

Something she would later reject.

The charms she used backfired badly, sending her crashing into the wall and knocking her unconscious as the tomb came down around her. She woke up in St Mungos, her partner had gotten her out - nearly getting himself killed in the process, and the two of them suffered serious injuries. For Jiaying those injuries impaired her motor functions and took three months of intense rehab and magical therapy before they healed, though they didn't fully and she still struggles with her left-hand coordination today. Jiaying ended up being dismissed for her actions as the incident was ultimately her fault, something she would readily admit and felt terrible about.

So she was left without a job and without an idea of what to do, in trying to be the best she'd ruined everything. She'd spent years hyperfocused on her career and hyperfocused on becoming the best, she'd turned down the chance to have kids and settle down and had lost quite a few friends in the process. The fall of one of Gringott's best curse-breakers had been splashed all over the papers and Jiaying didn't know what to do about it all.

In what, at the time, felt like a cowardly move she returned back to her Father and spent a year resting and recuperating there with them. Giving herself time to properly recover and for everything to die down back home, it would be late next year when she went back to Britain.

She drifted about for a few years, working a few muggle jobs and odd magical jobs before she was informed of an opening at Hogwarts by a close friend. The librarian position was open, she thought about the nights she had spent in the quiet of the library with only the librarian and books as company - she'd always liked it there. After a month of debating she decided that it felt right, that it made sense to get a job where she wouldn't (and couldn't) constantly compete to be the best and instead just watch over students, help them during study hall and spend some time in a place that had been home to some of the happiest memories of her life.

At the age of 45 she became the Hogwarts librarian, known for being the one to lift the ban on food and drinks being allowed in the library (which many students celebrated as they could now cram for exams and gorge themselves on sweets from Hogsmeade.) And ten years later she was still there.
