Personality and History
Personality
Eric is very much a gentle giant, known for his kind nature and good sense of humour. He has a near endless amount of patience and rarely shouts or gets mad at his students, something that stems from his hatred of the stern and sometimes intimating Professors that had taught him during his youth. If a student is struggling he'll try his best to help them, if a student is misbehaving he'll be stern and firm but won't yell or lose his temper.

It's known that if you manage to get Professor Mackenzie to yell at you then you must have done something serious. There has been but one occasions that he had lost it with a student, one was a stuck-up pureblood he caught hurling insults at a muggleborn including the dreaded racial slur Mudblood. He'd refused to allow that student back into the class for several weeks and that student was the only one to come close to failing flying at Hogwarts.

Eric rarely, if ever, holds grudges and so even if it pained him to do so when he helped with the Quidditch tryouts the next year and that very same first year was there he assured the boy that all was forgiven as long as he didn't do it again. He finds the idea of holding a grudge pointless, it takes a lot more energy to actively hate and hold a grudge against someone than it does to forgive them and move on. That doesn't mean he excuses or ignores peoples actions and he's glad to punish those who do wrong, he just doesn't allow it to constantly cloud his judgement.

This can lead to him being taken advantage of by the more troublesome students as he tries his best to see good in people and give people second, or even third and fourth, chances which can lead to students that don't change taking advantage of his trust in the goodness of humanity and seeing him as someone who is weak and someone who they can get away anything with.

Background
Born in Falkirk to a nurse and an electrician Eric was unaware of the Wizarding world. To him magic was just something in a storybook, made up and fictional. It wasn't until he turned eleven and got his letter to Hogwarts that he found out the truth, magic was real and he was a wizard.

His parents were bemused and distrustful at first, a strange man had come to their doorstep and told them that their son was some kind of wizard - Eric was surprised they'd managed to believe him at all when he thought about it in his later years. But after some gentle prodding, a demonstration that his Father claimed made him feel faint and a trip to Diagon-Alley his parents believed the truth and let him attend Hogwarts.

Before he joined Hogwarts he spent most of his time playing football with his neighbours and running wild on their estate,  he had a strong interest in PE, Teaching and Science and had he not attended Hogwarts he would have probably became a Professor of Sports Science or a Primary School Teacher.

The houses system was explained to him on the train by a fellow first year. He found the Gryffindor and Hufflepuff houses attractive, he liked the idea of being described as brave and chivalrous but he identified with the Hufflepuff principles of hard work and loyalty.

He'd like to think he was sorted into Hufflepuff because of his "Deep sense of patience, loyalty and fair play." And Eric spent the rest of his time at Hogwarts living by those principles and working hard, sometimes he found himself struggling with the ideas and concepts that his peers had been learning since birth and found himself falling behind in certain subjects but with the help of some Professors and friends Eric managed to get all P's and E's in his OWLS and NEWTS.

He even made it onto the Hufflepuff Quidditch team and was the Captain of the team for his sixth and seventh years. These two years cemented his love of Quidditch, although it could never quite replace the love he felt for football, and led him to go onto playing Quidditch professionally as a sport.

Ten years of his life were spent playing Quidditch for the Banchory Bangers, his parents had been happy he joined a Scottish team even if they didn't understand the sport he was playing. They'd attended most of his matches but Eric knew they did it more out of love than out of an enjoyment of the sport, though his Father was gradually being won round by the sport.

Then there was an accident, Eric and another teams Chaser got too close to each other and collided. Both falling to the ground and both lucky to walk away with any life-changing injuries, that incident was a realisation moment for Eric  and after some pleading from his parents. The pair of whom were scared of another accident happening. He decided to try to pursue teaching, after some hard work and many pleading letters to various magical schools he received a letter from Hogwarts stating that their current flying Professor, Madame Hooch was set to retire after a long career.

It was strange for him when he first got there, Madame Hooch had been the one to teach him to fly and shadowing her for a year  knowing that he was going to be trying to follow in her footsteps was a daunting. He could remember being an overexcited first year desperate to learn how to fly, thinking that he was invincible and that he'd master it immediately. He'd quickly been proven wrong and it had been Madame Hooch's coaching that got him through it, she had encouraged him to get back on the broom after he'd fallen off and had stopped some of his peers from flying off into the distance without any knowledge of how to get down. By the end of the year he was a decent, definitely competent, broom rider and because of that it meant he could go on to become a Quidditch player. He supposed that she was the one to thank for his success and made sure that she knew as much before she retired.

His first year without her had been terrifying and even after quite a few years he still felt like he was learning as he went on, he cared about his students and tried to look out for them. Happy to help out any students that were struggling in any other subjects, that he felt confident enough to help with, helping the first year muggleborns adapt to a whole new world and gently coaching the students who were scared of flying through the process.

He was proud to say that he'd never had a student, yet, unable to learn to fly by the end of their first year. They all had varying degrees of talent and control but no one had ever failed the class yet.
